Instruction on Fasting and Abstinence during Lent
1. Days of
Fasting are Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and the three Ember Days.
2. Days of
Abstinence are the days of fasting in (1) in addition to all Fridays
during Lent.
3. Fasting
is imposed upon all the faithful from age 18 through 59 inclusive.
4.
Abstinence is imposed upon all the faithful from age 14 through 59 inclusive.
5. Fasting
consists of two reduced-portion meals and one normal meal during the day,
with no
solid food taken in between meals.
6.
Abstinence may be carried out by refraining from the consumption of
red meat.
7. Persons
with medical or physical conditions, as well as pregnant or nursing women
are
automatically exempted from participation in fasting and abstinence.
Under no
circumstances
should fasting and abstinence be allowed to result in physical or
medical problems.
