THE "ASPERGES" AND "VIDI AQUAM"
In principal Sunday High Masses

ASPERGES me, Domine, hyssopo, et mundabor: lavabis me, et super nivem dealbabor. Ps. Miserere mei, Deus, secundum magnam misericordiam tuam. V: Gloria Patri. Asperges me...etc.

V. Ostende nobis, Domine, misericordiam tuam.

R. Et salutare tuum da nobis.

V. Domine, exaudi orationem meam.

R. Et clamor meus ad te veniat.

V. Dominus vobiscum.

R. Et cum spiritu tuo.

Oremus.--Exaudi nos, Domine sancte, Pater omnipotens, aeterne Deus, et mittere digneris sanctum Angelum tuum de coelis, qui custodiat, foveat, protegat, visitet atque defendat omnes habitantes in hoc habitaculo. Pro Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

From Easter to Whitsunday: Vidi Aquam

VIDI aquam egredientem de templo a latare dextro, alleluia: et omnes ad quos pervenit aqua ista salvi facti sunt et dicent: alleluia, alleluia. Ps. Confitemini Domino, quoniam bonus: quoniam in saeculum misericordia eius. V. Gloria Patri.

Then Ostende nobis as above with Alleluia.

THOU shalt sprinkle me, O Lord, with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed; Thou shalt wash me, and I shall become whiter than snow. Ps. Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy. V. Glory be. Thou shalt sprinkle...etc.

V. Show us, Thy mercy, O Lord.

R. And grant us Thy salvation.

V. O Lord, hear my prayer.

R. And let my cry come before Thee.

V. The Lord be with you.

R. And with thy spirit.

Let us pray.--Hear us, O holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, and vouchsafe to send Thy holy Angel from heaven, to guard, cherish, protect, visit and defend all that are assembled in this place: through Christ our Lord. Amen.

From Easter to Whitsunday: Vidi Aquam

I SAW water flowing from the right side of the temple, alleluia; and all they to whom that water came were saved; and they shall say: alleluia, alleluia. Ps. Praise the Lord, because He is good; because His mercy endureth forever. V. Glory be.

Then Hear us as above, with Alleluia.

I. MASS OF THE CATECHUMENS
The priest prepares for the great Sacrifice by prayers, sacred songs and readings from Holy Scripture.

PREPARATORY PRAYERS AT THE FOOT OF THE ALTAR
Prayers of humility, love, desire, contrition, and confidence.

THE SIGN OF THE CROSS

The priest, bowing down at the foot of the altar, makes the Sign of the Cross, from his forehead to his breast, and says:

IN nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. Amen.

Then joining his hands before his breast, he begins the Anthem:

Sacerdos. Introibo ad altare Dei.

Minister. Ad Deum qui laetificat iuventutem meam.

IN the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Then joining his hands before his breast, he begins the Anthem:

Priest. I will go unto the altar of God.

Server. Even unto the God of my joy and gladness.

THE PSALM 42 -- IUDICA ME
The priest alternates with the server in reciting this psalm to express his desire, joy and confidence in going to the altar of the Sacrifice. In Masses for the Dead and from Passion Sunday till Holy Saturday exclusively, this psalm is omitted.

S. Iudica me, Deus, et discerne causam meam de gente non sancta: ab homine iniquo, et doloso erue me.

M. Quia tu es Deus fortitudo mea: quare me repulisti, et quare tristis incedo, dum affligit me inimicus?

S. Emitte lucem tuam, et veritatem tuam: ipsa me deduxerunt, et adduxerunt in montem sanctum tuum et in tabernacula tua.

M. Et introibo ad altare Dei: ad Deum qui laetificat iuventutem meam.

S. Confitebor tibi in cithara, Deus, Deus meus: quare tristis es anima mea, et quare conturbas me?

M. Spera in Deo, quoniam adhuc confitebor illi: salutare vultus mei,

et Deus meus.

S. Gloria Patri, et Filio et Spiritui Sancto.

M. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper: et in saecula saeculorum. Amen.

The priest, signing himself with the Sign of the Cross, says:

S. Adiutorum nostrum in nomine Domini.

M. Qui fecit coelum et terram.

P. Give sentence with me , O God, and defend my cause against the ungodly people : O deliver me from the deceitful and wicked men.

S. For thou art the God of my strength, why has thou put me from thee : and why go I so heavily, while the enemy oppresseth me?

P. O send out thy light and thy truth, that they may lead me : and bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy dwelling.

S. And that I may go unto the altar of God, even unto the God of my joy and gladness : and upon the harp will I give thanks unto thee, O God, my God.

P. Why art thou so heavy, O my soul : and why art thou so disquieted within me?

S. O put thy trust in God : for I will yet give him thanks, which is the help of my countenance, and my God.

P. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.

S. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

P. I will go unto the altar of God.

S. Even unto the God of my joy and gladness.

The priest, signing himself with the Sign of the Cross, says:

P. Our help is in the Name of the Lord.

S. Who hath made heaven and earth.

THE PUBLIC CONFESSION
It is an acknowledgement of his guilt before God and that of all others assisting at the divine Sacrifice. Then, joining his hands, and humbly bowing down, he says the Confiteor:

S. Confiteor Deo omnipotenti, beatae Mariae semper Virgini, beato Michaeli Archangelo, beato Ioanni Baptistae, sanctis Apostolis Petro et Paulo, omnibus Sanctis, et vobis fratres: quia peccavi nimis cogitatione, verbo, et opere: (Here he strikes his breast thrice.) &ldots;mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. Ideo precor beatam Mariam semper Virginem, beatum Michaelum Archangelum, beatum Ioannem Baptistam, sanctos Apostolos Petrum et Paulum, omnes Sanctos, et vos fratres, orare pro me ad Dominum Deum nostrum.

M. Misereatur tui omnipotens Deus, et dimissis peccatis tuis, perducat te ad vitam aeternam.

The priest answers: Amen.

The server says the Confiteor.

M. S. Deus, tu conversus vivificabis nos.

M. Et plebs tua laetabitur in te.

S. Ostende nobis Domine, misericordiam tuam.

M. Et salutare tuum da nobis.

S. Domine, exaudi orationem meam.

M. Et clamor meus ad te veniat.

Extending his arms, he says:

S. Dominus vobiscum.

M. Et cum spiritu tuo.

S. Oremus.

Extending his arms again, he says:

Collect for Purity

ALMIGHTY God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee and worthily magnify thy Holy Name. Through Christ Our Lord. 	

R: Amen.

P. I confess to Almighty God, to Blessed Mary Ever-Virgin, to blessed Michael the Archangel, to blessed John the Baptist, to the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, to all the Saints, and to you, brethren, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, and deed (Here he strikes his breast thrice.) &ldots; through my fault, through my own fault, through my own most grievous fault. Therefore, I beg Blessed Mary Ever-Virgin, blessed Michael the Archangel, blessed John the Baptist, the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, all the Saints, and you my brethren to pray to the Lord our God for me.

S. May almighty God have mercy upon thee, forgive thee thy sins, and bring thee to everlasting life.

The priest answers: Amen.

The server says the Confiteor.

S. I confess to Almighty God, to Blessed Mary Ever-Virgin, to blessed Michael the Archangel, to blessed John the Baptist, to the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, to all the Saints, and to you, brethren, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, and deed (Here he strikes his breast thrice.) &ldots; through my fault, through my own fault, through my own most grievous fault. Therefore, I beg Blessed Mary Ever-Virgin, blessed Michael the Archangel, blessed John the Baptist, the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, all the Saints, and thee Father to pray to the Lord our God for me.

P. May the almighty and merciful Lord grant us pardon, absolution, and remission of our sins.

S. Amen.

Bowing down, he proceeds:

P. O God, wilt Thou not turn again and quicken us?

S. And thy people shall rejoice in Thee.

P. Show us, O Lord, Thy mercy.

S. And grant us Thy salvation.

P. O Lord, hear my prayer.

S. And let my cry come before Thee.

Extending his arms, he says:

P. The Lord be with you.

S. And with thy spirit.

P. Let us pray.

Extending his arms again, he says:

THE PRIEST ASCENDS THE ALTAR
With a prayer for pardon on his lips the priest ascends the altar, which he kisses. First extending, then joining his hands, the priest says audibly Oremus (Let us pray); then ascending to the altar, he says secretly:

Aufer a nobis, quaesumus, Domine, iniquitates nostras: ut ad Sancta sanctorum puris mereamur mentibus introire. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

His hands joined, and bowing down over the altar, the priest says:

Oramus te, Domine, per merita Sanctorum tuorum,

The priest kisses the altar.

&ldots;quorum reliquiae hic sunt, et omnium Sanctorum: ut indulgere digneris omnia peccata mea. Amen.

Take away from us our iniquities, we beseech Thee, O Lord, that we may be worthy to enter with pure minds into the Holy of Holies, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

His hands joined, and bowing down over the altar, the priest says:

We beseech Thee, O Lord, by the merits of Thy Saints,

The priest kisses the altar.

&ldots;whose relics are here, and of all the Saints, that Thou wouldst vouchsafe to forgive me all my sins. Amen.

THE ALTAR IS INCESNSED
&ldots;at Solemn Masses.

Whilst blessing the incense the priest says:

Ab illo benedicaris, in cuius honore cremaberis. Amen.

Be thou blessed by Him in whose honor thou art burnt. Amen.

B. FROM THE INTROIT TO THE OFFERTORY

Prayer of Faith

THE INTROIT
The priest, signing himself with the Sign of the Cross, reads the Introit of the day. (At the Masses for the Dead, the priest makes the Sign of the Cross on the Missal.) Going to the center of the altar, the priest turns to the people and says&ldots;

The Summary of the Law

HEAR what Our Lord Jesus Christ saith : Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment, and the second is like unto it : Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.

THE KYRIE ELEISON
A SERIES OF INVOCATIONS ADDRESSED TO EACH OF THE THREE DIVINE PERSONS.

Then, joining his hands, he says alternately with the ministers:

S. Kyrie eleison. (Lord, have mercy.)
M. Kyrie eleison. (Lord, have mercy.)
S. Kyrie eleison. (Lord, have mercy.)

M. Christe eleison. (Christ, have mercy.)
S. Christe eleison. (Christ, have mercy.)
M. Christe eleison. (Christ, have mercy.)

S. Kyrie eleison. (Lord, have mercy.)
M. Kyrie eleison. (Lord, have mercy.)
S. Kyrie eleison. (Lord, have mercy.)

THE GLORIA IN EXCELSIS
Standing at the middle of the altar, extending and then joining his hands,and bowing slightly, the priest says -- except during Lent and Advent and in Masses for the Dead -- the Gloria in excelsis. When he says the words: We adore Thee, We give Thee thanks; Jesus Christ; and Receive our prayer, he bows, and at the end he signs himself with the Sign of the Cross from forehead to breast:

GLORIA in excelsis Deo. Et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. Laudamus te. Benedicimus te. Adoramus te. Glorificamus te. Gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam. Domine Deus, Rex coelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine Fili unigenite Iesu Christe. Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris. Qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis. Quoniam tu solus Sanctus. Tu solus Dominus. Tu solus Altissimus Iesu Christe. Cum Sancto Spiritu in gloria Dei Patris. Amen.

GLORY be to God on high, and on earth peace good will to men. We praise Thee. We bless Thee. We worship Thee. We glorify Thee. We give thanks to Thee for Thy great glory. O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord, the only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For Thou only are holy. Thou only art the Lord. Thou only, O Jesus Christ, with the Holy Ghost , art most high, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

THE COLLECTS
Then the priest kisses the altar, and turning to the people says:

S. Dominus vobiscum.

M. Et cum spiritu tuo.

S. Oremus.

A Bishop may substitute "Pax Vobis" for "Dominus Vobiscum" before the Collect on days on which the Gloria is said.

P. The Lord be with you.

S. And with thy spirit.

P. Let us pray.	

A Bishop may substitute "Peace be with you" for "The Lord be with you" before the Collect on days on which the Gloria is said.

Here follow the Collects. The Celebrant first says the Collect of the Day, as appointed in the missal, and then the appointed Seasonal Collects, any prayers ad libitum from the Table of Prayers or the Section of Various Prayers, and then any appointed or discretionary commemorations. The Collect of the Day is said under its own ending, and the other prayers that follow it are joined together under one ending. The ending, abbreviated Per Dominum., is Per Dominum nostrum Jesum Christum filium tuum. Qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitate Spiritus Sancti, Deus. Per omnia saecula saeculorum. Variations to this are indicated in the Propers. The ending, abbreviated Through., is Through Jesus Christ, thy Son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God. World without end. Variations to this are indicated in the Propers.
